Titanium

Titanium Mobile by Appcelerator

Titanium by Appcelerator allows you to create native mobile and desktop application experiences using existing web skills.

So I’m all jazzed up, ready to give this iPhone app thing development another try.  Here we go, now before I go back into the black hole of Objective-C and Cocoa, I thought I’d take a close look at something I’d been keeping in my peripheral for a while. It’s called Titanium Developer, by a company called Appcelerator. When I dug deeper I really started to get excited. This looked like a bright group of guys developing something really useful for people like me!

Basically, if you’re a web developer and you know things like HTML, CSS and JavaScript, then you’re in luck because Titanium has a JavaScript API that enables you to write a language you already know and let them compile it into native Objective-C code that the iphone understands. It also makes it possible to easily port your iPhone application over to Android. Double the market = double the fun right?

Well I was sold. I immediately downloaded Titanium and spent most of my weekend reading the documentation watching all of their starter videos, and I almost bought the advanced videos (but read on to know why I didn’t). Things were looking up. Finally, I could get all the fancy native buttons, table views and animations while using a language that doesn’t scare me.  I felt like I had found my place, and my platform, I was determined to use this tool and really go all the way this time.
